About Us

The first Ullapool Book Festival was held in May 2005. It was founded by a group of literary enthusiasts in Ullapool Entertainments, the local voluntary arts organisation founded in 1982. The aim is to run an annual book festival the purpose of which is to promote and encourage the study, appreciation and knowledge of literature in Ullapool and the surrounding district.

We include work written in Gaelic and Scots. We have a strong Gaelic element bearing in mind our heritage and the fact that there are many Gaelic learners in the area as well as native speakers. Literature has a significant place in Highland culture and life. The book festival is not just a showcase for Highland writers but also for writers from other parts of Scotland, and indeed the world, to come and create an inspirational atmosphere.

It gives an opportunity for local people and visitors alike to hear the best the world of literature has to offer. Ullapool Book Festival is run by a committee of volunteers. They are: office-bearers - Joan Michael (chairman); Liz Beer (secretary); Effie Mackenzie (treasurer) committee members: Chrissy Boyd, Sheila Didcock, Audrey Maclennan, Catriona Martin, Kathy Ross. The UBF honorary president is Chris Dolan.

ULLAPOOL BOOK FESTIVAL UPDATE

VOLKER KUTSCHER CANCELLED

Unfortunately Volker is unable to join us from Germany due to illness. We wish him a good recovery. Refunds will be given to those who had booked tickets. If you bought a ticket from either bookshop please take it there for a refund. If you bought through PayPal we will refund you through that. Please allow a couple of days for this to happen as it is a laborious process going through every purchase made to see who has bought a Volker ticket!

REPLACEMENT OPENING SESSION

We are delighted to announce that Raja Shehadeh will be our new opening author – 0n Friday 10 May at 10am in Ullapool Village Hall. We are so grateful to him for agreeing to step in at such short notice. He is author of several books including Occupation Diaries, Travels with My Ottoman Uncle and Palestinian Walks: Notes on a Vanishing Landscape for which he was awarded the Orwell Prize for political writing in 2008.

Tickets will be on sale after 3pm tomorrow afternoon at both bookshops in Ullapool (blank tickets have to handwritten tomorrow morning!). These are in-person only sales so please don't phone them asking for them to be put aside. Arrangements for buying tickets from away will be posted tomorrow.
